A small nondescript evergreen that grows in the more arid parts of northern Africa, western India, the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Ashwaganda grows to a height of 2-3 feet and produces a red raisin like fruit. The entire plant including the leaves, flowers, fruit, and root are used for medicinal purposes. Its main historical use is a ginseng-like tonic to be used in cases of physical or mental exhaustion.
